Protected Areas Policy and Planning

Protected areas policy and planning is one of the core areas of consulting services provided by the firms, and includes the following elements:

  • Protected areas planning and development.
  • Boundary identification and demarcation.
  • Identification of valued ecosystem components.
  • Development of monitoring systems and research programmes.
  • Preparation of site management plans.
  • Preparation of national system plan.

A number of the programme assessment, evaluation, and project coordination assignments undertaken by the firms or their principals and Associates have focused on protected areas programming.  Past assignments include:

Preparation of the Management Plan for the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area, St. Lucia (2008-2009).

Sandy Cay III Project, British Virgin Islands (2006-2007).  The firms provided technical support to the British Virgin Islands National Parks Trust in protected areas system planning and site management planning, including revision of the national protected areas system plan.

Review of the Policy, Legal, and Institutional Frameworks for Protected Areas Management in the six Participating Member States of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (2005-2006).  The assignment also included conducting a “Comparative Analysis for Developing a Harmonized Protected Areas Framework” to be adopted by the member states of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.

Preparation of the Status Report on the implementation of the Regional Programme on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife for the biennium 2002-2003, on behalf of the Regional Coordinating Unit, United Nations Environment Programme-Caribbean Environment Programme.

Drafted the Work Plan for the Regional Programme on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife for the biennium 2004-2005, on behalf of the Regional Coordinating Unit, United Nations Environment Programme-Caribbean Environment Programme.

Site assessment and project formulation for amenity areas in Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago (2002), on behalf of the Caribbean Conservation Association-Caribbean Regional Environment Programme Project.

Preparation of the Font Hill Conservation Management Plan, Jamaica (1999).  This assignment involved the design of an ecotourism attraction within the protected area.
